"This is an interpretation of the recreational use of Bakhoor in al-Andalus, relating it to intimate gatherings where the presence of Bacchic poetry and wine imbued it with sensual connotations, the opposite of the mystical or sanitary ones with which Bakhoor was associated in everyday Muslim life in the Middle East at that time, a connection that persists to this day. Alhambra Bakhoor is a way of showing how Andalusian Muslim society allowed itself freedoms that were unthinkable for the Muslims of the caliphates of Damascus and Baghdad. Bacchic poetry (Jamriyya) was a lyrical genre cultivated with sophistication in Nasrid Granada (13th-15th centuries), dedicated to the celebration of wine, hedonistic pleasure, eroticism, and nature, often associated with mystical or courtly intoxication despite Islam's religious restrictions. This poetry, often intertwined with eroticism and descriptions of nature, was central to literary and courtly gatherings. Jamriyya, cultivated since antiquity (Anacreontic poetry), flourished in Arabic and Andalusian literature with figures like Abu Nuwas, in a quest to celebrate the art of pouring wine, taverns, and the disregard for social norms."-Ricardo Ramos.
