Why We Don't Run Ads

A recommendation engine paid by advertisers works for advertisers. Ours is paid by you, so it can afford to tell you not to buy something. That is the entire business model, stated plainly.

There is a simple test for any site that recommends fragrances: does it ever tell you not to buy one?

Most can't afford to. The dominant business model in fragrance content — blogs, influencer reviews, comparison sites — is affiliate revenue and sponsored placement. Every recommendation carries a commission, so every answer trends toward "yes, buy it." The sites aren't lying, exactly. They are just structurally incapable of the most useful sentence in fragrance advice: you already own something too close to this.

We built that sentence into the product. The buy-verdict feature exists to say it: it checks a candidate against your shelf and will flat-out tell you that the bottle you're considering duplicates something you own, or that it fills no gap in your collection. A feature like that cannot coexist with ad revenue from fragrance houses. Nobody pays to sponsor "don't buy."

What no ads buys you

Ranking you can trust. When search results and similar-fragrance lists are computed from scent data — notes, accords, real wear feedback — the ordering means something. The moment placement is for sale, every list becomes an auction and you can't tell which results earned their spot.

Recommendations that optimize for your shelf, not our margin. The engine is happiest when it finds variety — something genuinely different from what you own, in a family you're missing: say, a chypre when your shelf is all sweet ambers. An affiliate-funded engine is happiest when you buy anything at all. Those are different objective functions, and you can feel the difference in the results.

No inflated reviews. Community ratings here aggregate real votes. We don't massage scores for brands, because no brand is paying us to.

How we keep the lights on instead

Subscriptions. The plan is simple: the advanced tools — the wear engine that learns your preferences, the formula lab, deep collection analytics — sit behind a subscription, while the catalog, search, and the core discovery experience stay free, because a recommendation engine is only useful if it can see enough of the world.

That's the trade in one line: you are the customer, not the product being sold to fragrance houses. It costs us the easy money. It buys the engine its honesty — and honestly, an engine that can say "skip this one" is worth more to you than one that never will.
